Rabindra Sarobar Lake
Rabindra Sarobar Lake is known as the ‘lungs of south Kolkata’. Situated at Southern Avenue, almost 175 species of birds call this place their home. Nearly 1/3rd of them are migratory. This 192 acre recreational area is a biodiversity hotspot in true sense. Lots of trees, some of them are century old, and some large water bodies have made this place a favourite place for different types of flora and fauna. This is also ‘the most’ favourite place for the Kolkata birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

I have seen and photographed many of my first species of birds here, especially the flycatchers. Needless to say, within the city limit, this place is a safe haven for this particular species of birds. My collection of flycatchers in 2020 includes, Taiga flycatcher, Asian Brown flycatcher, Brown-breasted flycatcher, Verditer flycatcher, Blue-throated Blue flycatcher, Asian Paradise flycatcher and Ultramarine flycatcher.
After five years the Painted Storks have come to nest in one of the islands of the lake and successfully delivered several hatchlings.
The Lions Safari park inside the lake acts as the habitat of several residents and migratory birds. Most flycatchers and thrushes are found inside this park only. Several huge Siris, Banyan, Kadam or Krishnachura trees are the resting places for Spotted owlets, Shikras, Black kites, Indian Pond herons, several Barbets, Woodpeckers and other birds. This place has never failed me. Whether it is a new species of bird or a better picture of an already observed species, after each and every single visit, I’ve always come out of this place with lots of happiness and satisfaction! Till now, I’ve been able to spot 69 species of birds in Rabindra Sarobar and the list is given here.

It is not only a birdwatcher’s paradise, it is also very popular among the morning or evening walkers. Paved walkways along the lakeshore and also inside the lake area give walkers ample opportunity to perform their regular activities. Large sitting areas are very popular among the older generation as they love to chit-chat while taking the fresh air of the lake. When sun goes down at Rabindra Sarobar lake
This is not only a place for the birds. Several mammals, butterflies, insects and reptiles have made this place a real urban-biodiversity zone.
